Journey to the heart of the Mazatec mountains for an authentic healing experience rooted in thousands of years of tradition. This 7-day retreat offers a rare opportunity to work with sacred mushrooms in their place of origin, guided by a hereditary curandera who carries the unbroken lineage of this ancient practice.
Unlike modern "psychedelic retreats," our approach honors the traditional Mazatec understanding of mushrooms as sacred teachers and healers. The velada (nighttime ceremony) follows the traditional format passed down through generations, including sacred songs (cantos), prayers, and healing techniques specific to each participant's needs.
The week includes two mushroom ceremonies, daily integration practices, traditional temazcal (sweat lodge), plant medicine consultations, and deep immersion in Mazatec culture. You'll also have time to explore the beautiful mountain landscape, visit local markets, and rest in the peaceful setting of our retreat center.
This retreat is ideal for those seeking deep healing, spiritual connection, or a meaningful encounter with one of the world's oldest psychedelic traditions. All experience levels are welcome, though we recommend some prior preparation through meditation, therapy, or other inner work.
Our retreat center is nestled in the misty mountains of the Sierra Mazateca, the ancestral homeland of sacred mushroom use. The property features traditional adobe buildings, lush gardens of medicinal plants, and stunning views of the surrounding valleys. Ceremonies take place in a traditional ceremonial space (velada room) that has been blessed and used for healing work for over 50 years. The nearest town is a 30-minute drive away, ensuring complete privacy and immersion in nature.
Maria Elena is a third-generation curandera (healer) from the Mazatec tradition. She learned the sacred mushroom ceremonies from her grandmother, who was a contemporary of the legendary Maria Sabina. With over 25 years of experience guiding ceremonies, Maria Elena brings deep traditional knowledge combined with sensitivity to the needs of Western participants.
Psilocybin mushrooms occupy a legal gray area in Mexico. While not explicitly legalized, traditional ceremonial use is culturally protected and tolerated by authorities. Our retreat center has operated openly for over 15 years without any legal issues. We work with locally grown Psilocybe mexicana and Psilocybe caerulescens, the traditional species used by the Mazatec people for centuries.

This retreat changed my life in ways I'm still discovering. Maria Elena is an extraordinary healer—her presence alone is calming, and her guidance during ceremony was exactly what I needed. The setting is magical, the food is incredible, and the entire experience felt sacred and safe. I came seeking healing from grief and left with a profound sense of peace and connection. I cannot recommend this enough for anyone called to this work.
I've done ayahuasca retreats in Peru and psilocybin in Jamaica, but this was different—more intimate, more traditional, more... real. Maria Elena carries genuine lineage and it shows in every aspect of the ceremony. The Mazatec approach is gentle yet profound. The integration support was excellent, and I appreciated the smaller group size (only 8 of us). Worth every penny and then some.
