Most potency figures you see online, including the ranges in the table above, are community estimates. The best controlled data comes from a 2026 peer-reviewed study that grew 14 Psilocybe cubensis strains under identical conditions and measured each one by LC-MS.

Penis Envy measured at the top of the 1.0–1.5% psilocybin range usually quoted for it (about 1.5% psilocybin, 1.8% total tryptamines), which is one more reason never to dose it by Golden Teacher gram amounts. But the same study, and years of Oakland Hyphae Psilocybin Cup testing, show large batch-to-batch swings: Oakland Hyphae's founder summarised their Penis Envy results as tending to test higher but being "random every single time." A strain name is a rough guide, not a dose. Weigh your material and start low.

Choose Golden Teacher if you're new to psilocybin or want a balanced, insightful experience with manageable intensity. It's forgiving, predictable, and great for learning how mushrooms affect you. Choose Penis Envy if you're experienced and seeking a profound, potentially transformative journey. PE's high potency means smaller doses go further, but it demands respect and proper preparation. For most people, starting with Golden Teacher and working up to Penis Envy over multiple experiences is the wisest path.

It is not the sensible starting point. Penis Envy is rated difficult for beginners — high potency, heavy body load, a 5–7 hour duration, and a real likelihood of ego dissolution at moderate doses. The conventional path is to learn how you personally respond on a medium-potency strain such as Golden Teacher first, then step up deliberately rather than by accident.
Golden Teacher, mainly for margin of error. Sub-perceptual doses are small enough that a potency difference of this size is hard to measure accurately on a consumer scale, and overshooting a microdose on a Penis Envy-tier strain produces a noticeable experience at a moment you had planned to be functional.
