Psilocybin Dosage Guide: Microdose to Heroic Dose

This guide explains every psilocybin dose level — from microdose to heroic dose. Use the calculator as a starting point, not a prescription. Always put set, setting, and safety first.

For deeper write-ups, see the low dose and deep dose pages.

Dosage at a glance

Quick answer
A microdose is 0.1–0.3g. A moderate dose is 1–2.5g. A full dose starts at 3.5g. A heroic dose starts at 5g. These amounts vary by strain, so use a scale. Clinical trials use pure psilocybin in milligrams — for example, 10mg or 25mg COMP360 — not dried mushroom grams. Use the calculator for a personalized starting point.
Dose typeGramsCapsulesExperience
Microdose0.1 – 0.3g1 – 2Mood enhancement: subtle and uplifting
Low dose0.3 – 1.0g2 – 5Mild perceptual shifts, heightened senses
Standard dose1.5 – 3.0g8 – 15Full trip experience, vivid inner journey
Deep dose3.0 – 5.0g15 – 25Intense experience, deep introspection
Heroic dose5g+25+Profound, transcendental, ego-dissolving state

Capsule counts assume ~0.2g per capsule. Dried mushroom weight; effects vary by strain and individual.

Clinical (pharmaceutical) vs dried mushroom dosing

Clinical trials use purified psilocybin (e.g. COMP360) in milligrams — 10 mg and 25 mg are common. These are not the same as dried mushroom grams. The table below gives approximate dried-gram equivalents for typical Psilocybe cubensis.

Psilocybin (clinical)Approx. dried mushroomsContext
10 mg (e.g. COMP360)~1–1.5 g driedLow / threshold
25 mg (e.g. COMP360)~2.5–3.5 g driedCommon in depression/anxiety trials
30 mg~3–4 gHigher-dose research protocols

Equivalences are approximate; potency varies by strain (e.g. Penis Envy ~1.5× typical cubensis). Clinical trials use standardized psilocybin (e.g. COMP360), not dried mushrooms.

Heroic dose

A heroic dose is typically 5g or more of dried mushrooms, often in silent darkness (Terence McKenna). It can produce profound, ego-dissolving experiences and is only for very experienced users with strong preparation and support. See our heroic dose guide for details.

Key takeaways

  • 0.1–0.3g = microdose (sub-perceptual); 1–2.5g = moderate; 3.5g+ = full dose; 5g+ = heroic. Always use a scale.
  • See dedicated pages for low dose and deep dose ranges, plus the table above for every tier.
  • Clinical doses (10mg/25mg psilocybin) are not equivalent to dried grams — use the table above for rough equivalents.
  • Potency varies by strain; Penis Envy and APE are stronger — use less.
  • Set, setting, and a trip sitter matter as much as dose; see our safe trip and psilocybin therapy guides.
  • Start low, increase gradually over sessions, and never mix with alcohol or contraindicated medications — see our drug interactions guide for SSRI, lithium, MAOI, and other medication rules.

Common questions

Psilocybin dosage FAQ

What is a microdose of magic mushrooms?

A microdose of magic mushrooms is typically 0.1-0.3 grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms. This sub-perceptual dose doesn't cause hallucinations but may enhance mood, creativity, and focus. Common protocols include taking a microdose every 3 days (Fadiman protocol) or 4 days on, 3 days off (Stamets protocol).

How much magic mushrooms should a beginner take?

Beginners should start with a low dose of 0.5-1.5 grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms. This allows you to gauge your sensitivity and experience mild effects without being overwhelmed. Always have a trusted trip sitter present and ensure you're in a safe, comfortable environment.

What is a heroic dose of mushrooms?

A heroic dose, a term coined by Terence McKenna, is typically 5 grams or more of dried psilocybin mushrooms taken in silent darkness. This high dose can produce intense mystical experiences and complete ego dissolution. It's only recommended for very experienced users with proper preparation and support.

How long do the effects of magic mushrooms last?

The effects of magic mushrooms typically last 4-6 hours, with the peak occurring 1-3 hours after ingestion. Onset begins 20-40 minutes after consumption. Higher doses and more potent strains may extend the duration to 6-8 hours. Afterglow effects can persist for 24 hours or more.

Does body weight affect mushroom dosage?

Body weight can influence psilocybin effects, though it's less significant than with many other substances. Heavier individuals may need slightly higher doses, while lighter individuals should start lower. More important factors include individual sensitivity, stomach contents, and the specific mushroom strain's potency.

What is COMP360 or clinical psilocybin dosage?

COMP360 is a synthetic, pharmaceutical-grade psilocybin used in clinical trials. Doses in studies (e.g. Johns Hopkins, COMPASS) are often 1 mg, 10 mg, or 25 mg per 70 kg body weight — not directly comparable to dried mushroom grams. Clinical protocols use precise dosing under supervision; do not equate mg of pure psilocybin with dried mushroom weight without expert guidance.

Safety disclaimer
This calculator and dosage information are for educational purposes only and do not constitute medical or legal advice. Psilocybin remains illegal in many jurisdictions. Individual response varies with body chemistry, strain, and set and setting. Start low, use in a safe environment, and never mix with alcohol or other substances without research. If you have a personal or family history of psychosis or severe mental health conditions, consult a healthcare provider before use.
