This guide explains every psilocybin dose level — from microdose to heroic dose. Use the calculator as a starting point, not a prescription. Always put set, setting, and safety first.
Capsule counts assume ~0.2g per capsule. Dried mushroom weight; effects vary by strain and individual.
Clinical trials use purified psilocybin (e.g. COMP360) in milligrams — 10 mg and 25 mg are common. These are not the same as dried mushroom grams. The table below gives approximate dried-gram equivalents for typical Psilocybe cubensis.
Equivalences are approximate; potency varies by strain (e.g. Penis Envy ~1.5× typical cubensis). Clinical trials use standardized psilocybin (e.g. COMP360), not dried mushrooms.
A heroic dose is typically 5g or more of dried mushrooms, often in silent darkness (Terence McKenna). It can produce profound, ego-dissolving experiences and is only for very experienced users with strong preparation and support. See our heroic dose guide for details.

Recommended dose range (dried)
1g – 1.5g
For a standard psychedelic experience. Microdosing is typically 0.1g–0.3g; hero doses 3.5g+.
A microdose of magic mushrooms is typically 0.1-0.3 grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms. This sub-perceptual dose doesn't cause hallucinations but may enhance mood, creativity, and focus. Common protocols include taking a microdose every 3 days (Fadiman protocol) or 4 days on, 3 days off (Stamets protocol).
Beginners should start with a low dose of 0.5-1.5 grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms. This allows you to gauge your sensitivity and experience mild effects without being overwhelmed. Always have a trusted trip sitter present and ensure you're in a safe, comfortable environment.
A heroic dose, a term coined by Terence McKenna, is typically 5 grams or more of dried psilocybin mushrooms taken in silent darkness. This high dose can produce intense mystical experiences and complete ego dissolution. It's only recommended for very experienced users with proper preparation and support.
The effects of magic mushrooms typically last 4-6 hours, with the peak occurring 1-3 hours after ingestion. Onset begins 20-40 minutes after consumption. Higher doses and more potent strains may extend the duration to 6-8 hours. Afterglow effects can persist for 24 hours or more.
Body weight can influence psilocybin effects, though it's less significant than with many other substances. Heavier individuals may need slightly higher doses, while lighter individuals should start lower. More important factors include individual sensitivity, stomach contents, and the specific mushroom strain's potency.
COMP360 is a synthetic, pharmaceutical-grade psilocybin used in clinical trials. Doses in studies (e.g. Johns Hopkins, COMPASS) are often 1 mg, 10 mg, or 25 mg per 70 kg body weight — not directly comparable to dried mushroom grams. Clinical protocols use precise dosing under supervision; do not equate mg of pure psilocybin with dried mushroom weight without expert guidance.
