Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about magic mushrooms, covering safety, legality, effects, dosage, and more.
Psilocybin mushrooms have a relatively favorable safety profile compared to many substances. A 2010 study in The Lancet ranked them as the least harmful of 20 common drugs. They have very low toxicity—no deaths from psilocybin overdose alone have been documented. However, they are not without risks. The main concerns are psychological: they can trigger or worsen mental health conditions in vulnerable individuals, particularly those with a personal or family history of psychosis. They can also cause challenging experiences ('bad trips') that, while usually not causing lasting harm, can be distressing. Physical risks primarily come from accidents due to impaired judgment, not from the substance itself. Safety depends heavily on set (your mindset), setting (your environment), dose, and individual factors. With proper preparation, appropriate dosing, a safe environment, and a trusted sitter, risks can be significantly minimized.
